About the Trainer

Janis Mikelberg dog trainer with her dogs in Ontario.

Janis Mikelberg, CPDT-KA

Growing up I knew only about force based training methods which involved punishing my dog for not doing as asked. The desire to learn another way pushed me to search for alternative methods. In my heart I knew there must be another way other than creating a dog who was fearful of being punished.

I have been involved in dog training since 2003 when I began my career by apprenticing at one of Toronto’s leading obedience schools.  I quickly progressed to become one of the senior dog trainers.  My love of dogs has encouraged me to become more and more involved in dog training. My passion for learning led me to complete the requirements for the CPDT–KA designation which I proudly earned in 2007.

Training Philosophy

Many problem behaviours stem from a lack of communication between dog and owner. We assume our dogs understand what we want but dogs process and organize their worlds differently.

In my search for alternative training methods, I discovered it wasn't necessary to train with force or use tools such as shock, choke or prong collars. I discovered humane and effective methods exist. I choose to train using force free dog friendly methods.

I believe in treating my clients, both animal and human with respect, compassion and  understanding.

I employ reward based training methods based on up to date scientific research focusing on how dogs learn and process information.

A wonderful by-product of force free training is it helps to create a trusting, safe learning environment for your pet.

A dog who is willing and eager to learn is a joy to be with!

Guarantees in Dog Training

A well behaved dog is the culmination of many things. Consistency, repetition, time, prevention, redirection and reinforcement, are just some of the variables which affect the outcome. As a CPDT-KA certified trainer, I signed a Code of Ethics, which includes the following statement: "to refrain from providing guarantees regarding the specific outcome of training".

There can never be 100% guarantees when working with animals.

Dog training guarantee

I will guarantee the following:

  • I will provide you with up to date information and training techniques.

  • I will guide you in how to use those techniques so you can use them when I am not there.

  • I will provide ongoing email and telephone support to troubleshoot when necessary.

  • I will be upfront if I can resolve your issue over the phone or if further sessions are required.

My goal is for you to be satisfied and to have a trusting, healthy relationship with your pet.

Choose an Independently Certified Dog Trainer

The dog training profession is largely unregulated.  I am one of a limited number of dog trainers in Ontario to have earned a CPDT-KA designation through the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers, the first world wide, independent certification for dog training professionals. Certificants are committed to continuing education and professional excellence, with a focus on humane dog-friendly training methods.

"The Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers establishes and maintains humane standards of competence for animal training and behavior professionals through criteria based on experience, standardized testing, skills and continuing education."

In order to maintain my certification, I must regularly submit continuing education units as proof I keep up to date with the latest information.

I continue to align myself with associations that promote force free, humane training.

“Janis has been incredible for us…

… As a first time pet owner, it was a huge relief to have an expert who visited me before I picked up my puppy, see us the day I got my puppy and have her visit and train during those first months. Our puppy knew where to go the 1st day!! We know this service made all the difference and ensured the best experience. Janis is continuing her training with our new addition, Mylo because they simply change as they get older and need regular training just like we need the training as well. Thank you so much, Janis!”
