Spring is fast approaching. For many dogs, thunderstorms are an unfortunate part of the season.

If your dog does not react negatively to storms - wonderful! - take advantage of that and make lots of positive associations with storms. Do a favourite activity, feed favourite treats, play calming music. Don't wait for a negative emotion to surface before making storms a happy time.

There are many elements to a thunderstorm – darkening sky, change in barometric pressure, smell, lightening flashes, sound of rain, thunderclaps and wind blowing

There are cd's to purchase or downloads available with the sounds of thunderstorms. Speak to a force free trainer on how to counter condition your dog to the sounds using the cd.

There are various aids to consider to calm your dog during storm season. None are guaranteed but all are worth considering.

  • Speak to your veterinarian about anti anxiety medication if your dog has a severe reaction to storms. Keep in mind the following is not a recommended drug for storms.(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-GsmrFYHKk)
  • Melatonin (speak to your vet)
  • Storm Defender Cape http://www.stormdefender.com/how_it_works.htm a cape lined with metallic lame. The theory is the lining helps with static build up. If nothing else, your dog will look like Superman and make you smile.

Every dog is different and treatment will differ for every dog.
