Death and Taxes, Two Things Nobody Likes To Think Of Or Talk About Yet Both Have An Impact On Those Who Are Left Behind.

It’s not a comfortable or popular conversation but it needs to be had. We all think we’re immortal until we aren’t.

Having that discussion with family and friends while you still can, is vital to ensure your beloved family pet does not end up in a shelter or left behind to fend for himself.

Have you thought about it? Have you had a discussion about where your pet/s will go when you can no longer care for them either due to illness or death?

I have been seeing too many postings about older pets whose owner has passed or been hospitalized. Often the pets themselves are older and can have their own medical issues.

Older dogs are not the ones who will find a new home quickly. Younger puppies often take up those spots. It’s heartbreaking to see the sad faces of older dogs that have nowhere to go sitting in a shelter or foster home.

As difficult as it can be, have that conversation now.

Do you have a fantastic breeder who will take back your dog when you die or can no longer care for him? Good breeders will include that in their contract.

Do you have friends or family members you trust to provide your dog with not only physical but emotional and health needs as he ages? Can you set up a financial plan to help them out with care if necessary?

Speak to your veterinary team, your friends, your family, your breeder.

It’s not a happy thought but have a plan for what happens to your dog upon your death.
